Janine Walker

Independent for Penticton Council

Businesses & Jobs

Artificial Intelligence & Data Centres

Penticton is not the right location for data centers given it's a tourist destination and is built on a small footprint.

Climate Change, Heat, Fires, & the Environment

Green Space

We need to encourage our government to properly manage our forests and say no to data centers in our area.

Private Vehicles & Parking

We need to make sure there's parking for businesses and residents. I will not support buildings that don't provide adequate parking or infrastructure changes that take away parking.

Walking & Cycling

Bike lanes need to make sense, not block access to businesses, and they need to be desired by the community with transparent public engagement, not just built because they are partially funded.

Community Centres, Libraries, Parks, and Other Public Spaces

Green Space

We need to encourage our government to properly manage our forests and say no to data centers in our area.

Public Washrooms

We need to provide safe public washrooms. As a downtown business owner I see the need but also see the challenge due to previous attempts to provide them only to see them vandalized.

Sidewalks & Bike Paths

We don't need to spend money on bike lanes when there more pressing issues to address like affordability.

Culture & Events

Festivals & Events

Penticton was the place to be in the summer and it doesn't feel like that anymore. We need to bring back activities and events, and revitalize our downtown making it a place to be rather than a place to avoid.

Housing & Homelessness

Homelessness

Demand provincial action on addiction and homelessness.

Housing Accessibility

Fight to reduce red tape and provide clear transparent fee schedules for contractors and developers.

Property Taxes

Property taxes have increased substantially in the last four years. I will fight to freeze and roll back property taxes.

Human Rights

Public Washrooms

We need to provide safe public washrooms. As a downtown business owner I see the need but also see the challenge due to previous attempts to provide them only to see them vandalized.

Local Government, Planning, & Democracy

Artificial Intelligence & Data Centres

Penticton is not the right location for data centers given it's a tourist destination and is built on a small footprint.

Budgeting

I will fight to commission a forensic line-by-line audit-every contract, consultancy, miscellaneous line item. If it doesn't deliver for taxpayers, it gets cut.

Good Governance

The people are the government and we need to restore the power to them. Transparency and public engagement is key.

Mental Health, Drugs, & Addiction

Treatment for Addiction

We need to provide local options for people who are ready for treatment and provincial options for those who can no longer make responsible choices for themselves anymore.

Public Safety & Policing

Non-Police-Based Public Safety

Encourage neighborhood watch groups, neighbor hood social media pages etc. keeping community connected and neighbor knowing one another.

Roads, Transit, & Getting Around

Private Vehicles & Parking

We need to make sure there's parking for businesses and residents. I will not support buildings that don't provide adequate parking or infrastructure changes that take away parking.

Sidewalks & Bike Paths

We don't need to spend money on bike lanes when there more pressing issues to address like affordability.

Transit Projects

A good transit system is important to many people. We need to make sure there's adequate transit options that connect up and down the valley.

Walking & Cycling

Bike lanes need to make sense, not block access to businesses, and they need to be desired by the community with transparent public engagement, not just built because they are partially funded.

Biography

submitted by the candidate or their team
Thirty-six years in Penticton. Twenty-five of those running a business downtown. The same downtown she's watched council slowly strangle with bad policy and worse priorities. She and her husband raised three daughters here. This isn't a campaign stop for Janine. It's home.

Reason for running

submitted by the candidate or their team
Year after year, taxes climb and we're left with the same streets, services, and excuses. As a downtown business owner and homeowner we've paid for every bad decision council made. I need to be a voice of common sense to promote change and transparency..
